| Description | In Jan 1979 The Old Crowd, a TV play directed by Lindsay Anderson and written by Alan Bennett, was aired on ITV. The play was a surreal, disturbing portrayal of a dinner party in an uncertain and unsafe near future. It was a radical departure from the normal confines of TV drama and was poorly received by the critics. However the Finnish Director Jorn Donner, head of the Swedish Film Institute, was so impressed by the production that he attempted to raise money for an extended film version. A good deal of work was done developing the project with Alan Bennett writing a screenplay with additional scenes. Unfortunately financing collapsed a few weeks before the film was scheduled to begin shooting in Sweden in the summer of 1980
