Description | The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) was founded in 1932 following the success of the first Commonwealth Games in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada. The CGF is responsible for the direction and control of the Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth Youth Games and works closely with the Commonwealth Secretariat, Royal Commonwealth Society and Commonwealth Local Government Forum. Each nation that participates in the Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth Youth Games has an affiliated Association/Union/Committee which reports to the CGF - in Scotland's case it's affiliated body is called Commonwealth Games Scotland (see PH/1 for more details). Sir Peter Heatly was elected as Chairman of the CGF in 1982 and held this post until 1990, overseeing the 1986 Games in Edinburgh and the 1990 Games in Auckland. As such, most of the material within this sub-collection comes from the decade between 1980 and 1990 although his files contain copies of Minutes from as far back as 1958. The 1980s was a significant period in the history of international sport as the Gleneagles Declaration of 1977 was used to prevent sporting engagement with athletes from South Africa in a bid to protest against Apartheid. The material in this sub-collection consists of Minutes 1958-1998, Correspondence 1982-2001, Publications 1963-2004, Papers from General Assemblies and Committee Meetings 1986-2011, Items and photographs, Material honouring Peter Heatly as Chairman of the CGF and wider Commonwealth Sports material. Note: There is also some CGF-related material within the sub-collection PH/2. |
