TitleManuscript Catalogue of Brazilian Plants. Volumes 2 - 4: 701 - 3461
DescriptionThe book contains volumes 2 - 4. Volume 2 begins with entry 701 but the end of volume 2 and volume 3 are not clearly distinguished. Volume 4 is made up of entries 2585 - 3461. At the beginning of the book are a number of notes, one of which explains that the Brazilian herbarium begins at number 701 and the catalogue numbers which relate to each volume of the Catalogus Geographicus Brasilia are listed. There is a list which details the 113 specimens sent to Dr Hooker from Rio de Janeiro in 1826. There is a note which explains how the plants may be numbered in the inverse order of how they were collected. There is a page that explains that some words in the catalogue may be underlined because they were deemed characteristic and suitable names 'should the plant prove to be an undescribed species'. The use of brackets shows species which have been collected at a previous or subsequent date. A colour sample sheet has been painted onto one page and it shows 60 colours ranging from white to Indian Ink and the colour numbers are used to describe the appearance of the plants. The next page shows the catalogue numbers for the plants which have been collected at the different locations. There is then a key explaining the different symbols which are used throughout the catalogue. The remainder of the volume lists plants collected with occasional sketches and it includes a description of the location of where the plants were found.
