AdminHistoryThe Right Honourable Samuel Turner is believed to have been born in 1714, the son of Richard Turner and Jane. If his date of birth is supposed to be correct, he would be the Samuel Turner admitted to the Company by patrimony on the 7 Dec 1736. His father, Richard, was made free on 26th July 1710, following an apprenticeship to Terry Wetherby/Wetherly, a callender. Richard's apprenticeship was registered on 3 May 1698 and Richard was described as the son of Richard, a yeoman of Brockworth in Gloucestershire.

According to other sources, Samuel Turner married Elizabeth Wright, with whom he had two sons and two daughters. She passed away on 26 September 1787 at 83 years of age.

Samuel Turner was [according to his memorial] a merchant of Mincing Lane and was an Alderman of Tower Ward between 1762 and 1775 [Beaven, I p203]. He was elected Master of The Clothworkers' Company in 1763, but excused service. He was elected Sheriff in 1764 and the twentieth Clothworker Lord Mayor in 1768/69. He passed away on 23 Feb 1777 aged 63 and was buried at St Dunstan's in the East where a monument was erected in his memory. His will was proved at the PCC on 5 Mar 1777 [Beaven, II, p132].

The papers were presented to the Company by Miss I. Hawkins Turner, daughter of Henry Hawkins Turner, Master 1946/7 in 1965 - see Trusts & Grants committee minutes for 26 Oct 1965 for further information. Hawkins Turner is a descendent of Samuel Turner although the exact familial relationship is not clear and the Clothworker line did not continue after Samuel. Henry Hawkins Turner entered the Company by redemption in 1902; Isabel Mary Hawkins Turner was made Free by patrimony in 1981.
