Murie was born on 30 March 1832 and received an education in the medical profession at Glasgow University, specialising in zoology. He worked at the Royal Infirmary, Glasgow, and later the Royal College of Surgeons, London, as an assistant in the Museum and worked with Professor J.E. Queckett. He travelled widely in Europe, sometimes working as ship's surgeon. He also joined the disastrous expedition to the White Nile under Consul John Petherick where Murie managed to collect much valuable zoological material, particularly fish. Murie also worked with the local fisheries. He died in 1925.
DescriptionComprises 17 pencil and watercolour botanical sketches [1860-1863?] by James Murie. These sketches are thought to have been made when Murie accompanied Consul [John] Petherick on his expedition to the White Nile. Drawings enclosed in a wrapper labelled: 'Botanical drawings made by Mr James Murie (who accompd [accompanied] Consul Petherick), 1869'. Subjects depicted include:

- fungi
- wild plants
- trees (including a note signed 'J.M. Sept [18]61' on reverse relating to trees and shrubs in the Arabian desert and on the Nile, and a reference to Petherick)

Includes a letter of transmittal from W.T. Thiselton-Dyer, dated 27 March 1887.
