| AdminHistory | The State Darwin Museum [formerly known as the Museum Darwinianum, Moscow] was established in 1907 by Professor Alexander Eric Kohts [also known as Coates], from his own collection of biological specimens. Kohts was a museum researcher, who read the lectures on the theory of evolution at the Moscow Higher Female Courses at the University of Moscow. When it was opened, it was the first museum devoted only to the theory of evolution. In 1911 Alexander Kohts married Dr Nadezhda Ladygina, the animal behaviourist, and they were co-directors of the museum until 1964. Plans for a new building for the museum were begun in the 1960s but not complete until the 1990s. The museum is still in existence today. |
| Description | A series of of 42 photographs (on 22 sheets) of artist's re-creations, specimens, sculptures and manuscripts illustrating the life and work of Charles Darwin. Includes a typscript commentary by A.E.Kohts [also known as Coates]. These are contained within a folder on which is written: 'To the Linnean Society of London. To the 80th anniversary of Darwin's death (19-IV-1882 - 19-IV-1962) by Prof. Dr Alexander Eric Coates [also known as Kohts] F.F.Z.S., A.L.S., founder (1896) and director or the State "Museum Darwinianum" of Moscow.

Also includes a carbon copy of a letter, dated 2 April 1962, from the General Secretary of the Linnean Society to Coates [Kohts] thanking him for the set of photographs. |
