| AdminHistory | Humphry Waldo Sibthorp (1713–1797) was a British botanist. He was born in Canwick, Lincoln, in c. 1713 and completed a Masters at Oxford University in 1737 and a Doctorate in 1745. Following the death of Johann Jacob Dillenius (1684–1747), he became the Sherardian Professor of Botany at the University of Oxford from 1747 to 1783; he is famous for having taught one course for 37 years. He began the catalogue of the plants of the botanical garden of the university, 'Catalogus Plantarum Horti Botanici Oxoniensis'. He was a correspondent of Linnaeus. His youngest son was the well-known botanist John Sibthorp (1758–1796), who continued the Catalogus Plantarum. His oldest son, Humphrey, was a Tory MP for Lincoln. His daughter, Sarah, married Montague Cholmeley (b. 8 Jul 1743, d. 9 Sep 1843). Sibthorp died on 12 August 1797 at Instow, Devon. |
Sir Thomas Frankland (1750-1851) was born in Westminster, London, in 1750, the eldest surviving son of Admiral Sir Thomas Frankland, 5th Baronet and his wife Sarah Rhett. He completed a Masters at Merton College, Oxford University in 1771 and attended Lincoln's Inn, 1772. He succeeded to the baronetcy, to become 6th Baronet, and Thirkleby Hall on the death of his father in 1784 and commissioned James Wyatt to rebuild the hall in 1790. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1773 and of the Linnean Society in 1796. He was elected MP for Thirsk in 1774 (sitting until 1780) and again in 1796 (until 1801). He served as High Sheriff of Yorkshire for 1792–1793. He drew algae and had the marine plants of William Hudson.
Sibthorp married Dorothy, daughter of William Smelt and had five children of whom only his heir, Sir Robert Frankland, 7th Baronet, survived. He died at Thirkleby Hall near Thirsk on 4 January 1831. |
