| AdminHistory | John Ellis FRS (1714-1776) was a British linen merchant and naturalist. He was the first to publish a written description of the Venus flytrap in a pamphlet entitled "Directions for Bringing over Seeds and Plants from the East Indies and Other Distant Countries" (1770). He imported numerous American seeds and was particularly interested in the problems connected with transportation of plants and seeds. The "Natural History of Many Uncommon and Curious Zoophytes", written with Daniel Solander, was posthumously published in 1786. Ellis was a correspondent of Carl Linnaeus who described him as "a bright star of natural history". |
| Description | Pamphlet entitled "Reasons for lowering the duty on Coffee". It is divided in to six parts, with headings, as follows:
No 1. "Reasons for lowering the duty on coffee and the chocolate nutt [sic.], on which a petition to parliament may be founded, submitted to the consideration of the proprietors of Coffee Estate, and Cacoa [sic.] plantations."
No 2. "Matters of fact stated in a familiar manner to prove the assertion in the seventh article and to shew [sic.] in what proportions, Tea, Coffee and Chocolate answer for the same purposes."
No 3. What duties the several quantities of Tea, Coffee, and Chocolate, mentioned in no 2 should pay."
No 4. What duties, they actually pay at present
No 5. Plan for receiving the Coffee Planter, Encouraging the cultivation of the Chocolate Nutt [sic.], and Coffee, and preventing the smuggling of one and the other."
No 6. A Sketch of a petition to Parliament: "To the Honourable the Commons of Great Britain in Parliament assembled. The Humble Petition of the Proprietors, of Lands in the Islands of Grenada, St. Vincent, Dominica, & Tobago." |
