AdminHistorySamuel Pickworth Woodward (1821 – 1865) was an English geologist and malacologist.

Woodward was born on 17 September 1821, the son of the geologist Samuel Woodward. S. P. Woodward worked at the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester, as the professor of geology and natural history in 1845 and in 1848 was appointed assistant in the department of geology and mineralogy in the British Museum. He published 'A Manual of the Mollusca' in 3 parts (1851-1856). He had 2 sons who had similar interests to their father. Horace Bolingbroke Woodward (1848-1914) was a successful geologist who was President of the Geologists' Association from 1893-1894. His younger son, Bernard Barham Woodward, was a malacologist who worked at the British Museum and, later, the Natural History Museum. S.P. Woodward died on 11 July 1865.
DescriptionAuthor's working copy of 'Manual of Mollusca', London (1851-56) by S.P. Woodward. Comprises an album with pages mounted 2 to a leaf, annotated and supplemented with printed extracts and MS notes.

Also contains a note [thought to be] by P.P. Carpenter [opposite pp. 245-246] on how to measure bivalves [MS/228a] including illustrations; another by Mr Jones (near the back of the volume) relating to snail recipes including instructions on cooking snails including 'To make a hash of snails', 'To dress snails in a pottage' and 'To bake snails'; and a newspaper cutting, dated 18 June 1864 [inserted at pp.12-13] relating to different types of deep-sea oysters, including "crow oysters" and scallops, such as "Queen" or "King Henry"

The title page date has been altered to read 1864. Includes the signature of Horace B. Woodward [son of S.P. Woodward], dated November 1866 in inside front cover.
