| AdminHistory | Joshua Reynolds Gascoigne Gwatkin (1855 - 1939) was born on the 24 March 1855 at Millbrook, Hampshire, to John Reynolds (gentlement) and Emma Amelia Salmon (daughter of Lieutenant-General William Broome Salmon). He was descended from the artist, Sir Joshua Reynolds. He studied at Cambridge University and was admitted at the Inner Temple in November 1877. He lived at the Manor House, Potterne, Devizes, Wiltshire. He was a Justice of the Peace for Wiltshire and also a Major in the Royal Wiltshire Imperial Yeomanry. He married Arundel Augusta Penruddocke, daughter of John Hungerford Penruddocke and Elizabeth Heathcote Ludlow-Bruges, on 2 August 1882 at Holy Cross Parish Church, Seend, Wiltshire, England and they had 2 children: Robert Torrington Gwatkin (b. 1885, d. 23 Apr 1917) and Arundel Theophilia Gwatkin (b. 2 Dec 1886, d. 1971). He died on 12 September 1939.
Gwatkin was a keen botanist and compiled lists of flowers he had seen including 'List of Flowers near Potterne' (1921-26) and 'List of Wiltshire Plants' (1929) which were used by D. Grose in the writing of his publication, 'The Flora of Wiltshire' (1957). |
| Description | A notebook containing a list of flowers including locations recorded between 27 May 1917 and 5 September 1938 by Joshua Reynolds Gascoigne Gwatkin. Many of the flowers are listed from Potterne (Wiltshire) but other locations include Wiltshire, Cumberland, Cornwall, Hampshire, Yorkshire, Durham, Kent, Sussex, Jersey, Norfolk, Devon, Monmouthshire, Derbyshire, Dorset, Glamorganshire, Berkshire, Surrey, Somerset, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Ireland and Scotland.
Also includes loose inserts comprising further lists of plants (written on the reverse of church notices) and correspondence relating to car insurance, notes, and a letter dated 9 July [19]36 from W.B. Turrill (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew) relating to an orchid drawing. Also includes a list of names (and addresses) at the beginning of the notebook, possibly of people who helped to locate flowers. |
