This is a fine early 19th century lacquered brass miner's dial, an underground surveying instrument, which was made for John Craich (1775 - 1854), who became Manager of Alloa Colliery Company in 1835 and was the driving force in its early development

Barony of Alva Court Book

Part of a list of tenants, cottars and householders from the Barony of Alva Court Book of 1738 to 1782 (which has been digitised in its entirety). The baron courts gave local landowners, in this case the Johnstones of Alva, the power to deal with territorial disputes and local misdemeanours such as assaults, drunkenness and breaches of the Sabbath. They gradually fell into disuse after the passing of the Heritable Jurisdictions Act (1747).
