Description | This profile view of an angel playing a harp is one of the few known works by Daisy Watt. The angel is shown in the form of a young woman with bobbed haircut and halo, her garment and wings decorated with distinctively Art Deco geometric motifs: this and the background decoration all suggest that it was painted in the late 1920s or 1930s.
Little is known of the life of Daisy Watt, who lived for many years with her sister and fellow artist Katherine Watt in Argyll Cottage, Clackmannan. Her work was undoubtedly influenced by Celtic Revivalism , but also possessed a distinctive Art Deco quality. The title 'Music' suggests that this work may have been one of a series associated with a stained glass commission or illustrations for a book, though the original label on the back indicates that the work was also exhibited.
Daisy Watt exhibited at the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours between 1939 - 1941. |
